Press notes: 28/9/12
Nairn Academy Library and the English department are planning an exciting fortnight of
events in late November designed to encourage pupils and staff to pick up a book and read for
S1 classes will take part in a sponsored Readathon to be launched on Monday 12 th November
at an assembly. Pupils will be sponsored to read for the following two weeks. All money
raised goes to the Readathon charities: CLIC Sargent, providing support for young people with
cancer and their families; Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity for seriously ill young
people; and, Readwell, who provide books and storytellers to children in hospital. Pupils also
earn free books for the school by taking part. All S1’s will be issued with sponsor forms and
information leaflets during launch week.
During the first week of the Readathon, from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd November, Book
Swap Shops will run for all year groups and staff. Pupils are invited to bring in a novel or book
they have enjoyed and are willing to exchange- they will swap this for a token, allowing them
to “buy” a book from the Swap Shop Stall. If you have any junior or senior fiction or non-fiction
you would be willing to donate for the pupil or staff Swap Shops, please hand these in for the
attention of Mrs Abenheimer in the English Department.
As a fun addition, Jenny Murdoch in the library plans a quiz sheet, where pupils need to match
staff to their favourite book. There will also be opportunities to write reviews, browse new
releases and simply fall into a good book in a quiet corner. Pupils in S1 will be encouraged
to read during registration and we hope everyone- staff, pupils and parents- can use this
opportunity to enjoy reading.
The annual Scholastic Book Fair will visit the school from the 28th November to the 3rd
December to round off this fortnight of events. By supporting this event, pupils help to earn
free books for the school, and can take advantage of discounts and special offers on some of
the books available.
